Royal Ascot kicks off a sporting summer

The glamour, the excitement, the best in the world… All this and more is on show at Royal Ascot, with the racing festival kicking off British summertime soon. Running in June, the festival will play host to the world’s best racehorses all competing for some of the most prestigious prizes in horse racing.

Day 1 will kick off with appropriate pomp and circumstance as the arrival of the Royal Procession marks the start of the festival. Highlights on the racecard include three Group 1 races: The Queen Anne Stakes, the King’s Stand Stakes and the St James’s Palace Stakes.

The highlight of the more sedately paced day 2 is the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, with three Group 2 races (The Queen Mary Stakes, The Queen’s Vase and The Duke of Cambridge Stakes) rounding out a nevertheless exciting day of sport.

Famous for the glamour on show, day 3 of the festival is Ladies Day and one definitely not to miss for any lover of fashion. It’s not all about the dresses though, as the historic Gold Cup also runs on this day, pitting Flat racing’s best stayers against each other.

Day 4 features two Group 1 contests: the Coronation Stakes and the Commonwealth Cup, as well as the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes and the Group 3 Albany Stakes.

Rounding out the festival on its final day is the exceptional £1m Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes, featuring the best international sprinters from around the world. Another highlight for racing fans is the festival’s final race: the Queen Alexandra Stakes, which is the world’s longest Flat race at a distance of 2 miles, 5 furlongs and 143 yards (4.4km).
